William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business executive, software developer, investor, author, and philanthropist. He is the founder of Microsoft, along with his young friend Paul Allen. During his time at Microsoft, Gates held the position of chairman, chief executive officer, president and chief software developer, while also the largest shareholder until May 2014. He was a major microcomputer revolution in the 1970s and and 1980s.

Gates was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. In 1975, he and Allen founded Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It became the world's largest private software company. Gates led the company as chairman and CEO until he stepped down as CEO in January 2000, followed by Steve Ballmer, but remained chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer. software developer. In the late 1990's, he was criticized for his business practices, which were considered anti-competitive. This view has been supported by a number of court decisions. In June 2008, Gates switched to a temporary share in Microsoft and a full-time job at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an independent charitable foundation for him and his then wife, Melinda Gates, founded in 2000.  He stepped down as chairman of the Microsoft board in February 2014 and took up a new position as technical advisor to support the newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella. Since 1987, Gates has been listed on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world. From 1995 to 2017, he held the Forbes title of the richest man in the world every year except 2010 to 2013. In October 2017, he was surpassed by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who had an estimated net worth of $ 90.6 billion compared to Gates' US $ 89.9 billion at the time. As of June 2022, Gates had an estimated US $ 123 billion, making him the fourth richest man in the world. 

Later in his career and since leaving Microsoft's day-to-day operations in 2008, Gates has pursued numerous business and personal pursuits. He is the founder and chairman of several companies, including BEN, Cascade Investment, bgC3, and TerraPower. He has donated large sums of money to charities and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is reported to be the largest non-profit organization. Basically, he led an early 21st century vaccination campaign that was instrumental in eradicating polio virus in Africa. In 2010, Gates and Warren Buffett launched the Giving Pledge, in which they and other millionaires pledged to donate at least part of their wealth to charity.
